Indian Elephant Art

Today we had our first session with Mrs Simpson to create our flour and water indian elephants. We had an outline of an elephant that drew around using water and flour mixed together. Next week we will paint them and then when it is dry we will peel off the flour and water glue to leave a white outline.

Xavier is today's syndicate superstar because of his fantastic reading. When he arrived at Outram School this year he was reading at Level 6 and last week he passed a Level 19 test! Well done Super Reader!!

The All Blacks have written to us

In week 1 of this term we each wrote to the All Blacks to congratulate them on their win AND also to ask them to come to Dunedin for a parade.

Today a letter arrived in the post to say thank you for our letters, but there was no mention in the letter about a parade. At least we achieved our aim of getting a reply!

A busy day in Room 10

Miss McCulloch has been with Room 10 for 2 weeks now, and this week she is teaching for 4 days. We all got outside today for a great PE session with the tennis balls and she did relays with us at fitness time.

Xavier's step mum had a new baby girl called Harmony last week. Xavier is very proud to be a big brother and Mrs P is hoping that he will help Tash by changing nappies!

Perfect Pet Day

We all had a great time at Pet Day on Friday! It was a shame that it started to rain after lunch so lots of us missed the Grand Parade because we had to keep our animals dry. Here is Lachlan with his beautiful cat and look at Ruby-May's fabulous face painting.

Athletics Day

Well done everyone for your effort at athletics day! Riley represented all the Year 3's in the Year 3 and 4 400m race at the senior athletics. His mum is so proud of him!

Technology Challenge

On the last day of Term 3 we held our Technology Challenge. We had to build something with a partner that uses a light. We had all sorts of objects such as light houses, homes and the sky tower. It was great to see the parents that came along to see our creations too!

Mr Brookland came in on Friday to talk to us about electricity. We learnt about how electricity is generated at a dam and then gets into our homes. He had built a great series of circuits to show us - they included a fan, lights and a motorbike horn.

Electrical Circuits - farm style

We have started to learn about electrical circuits. Today Fynn's dad came and built a special type of circuit outside our classroom. He showed us how to make an electric fence circuit. Some of us tested if it was on by touching the fence tape with grass - and yes, it was on!

Last week we were lucky enough to have cricket coaching from Sport Otago. We learned new skills and then played a game of non-stop cricket. We were all so good for our coach that he gave us each a treaty bag with posters and games in it.

After morning tea on Thursday our maths class went out and collected rubbish and we categorised the rubbish into similar categories. Then we created a big graph with all of the rubbish. We presented this at our Monday assembly to show the school how much rubbish was found after Mr Heenan had already done a clean up before school.

On Friday our class had kiwiana day. We dressed up as kiwiana icons and had a yummy kiwiana lunch. We also presented our kiwiana assembly item - what a busy busy day!

We looked at our eggs today - not much had happened to the orange juice egg. We did find that it could be wiped clean very easily.

The other egg was completely different - it was squishy and rubbery! The egg white and yolk were like jelly said Zara.

Each week Mrs Stedman has been showing us a couple of chess moves. Outram School has been very lucky because we have been donated some beautiful chess sets. Room 10 are also super duper lucky because Ameila comes along and helps us out at chess time as well - what a great teacher aide trainee you are Amelia - thank you.

We had a wonderful trip to the Art Gallery

Today Room 10 went to Dunedin on the bus to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery to learn some more about New Zealand art and icons. We spent some time in one of the galleries looking at what made that piece of art so special. We also got to play some very special bells - they are all different colours and when they are played in a certain order they make the tune of Pokarekare Ana!

Next we went into the art classroom and created a piece of work each called "Juggled Art". We each had a large person or animal at the bottom that was a juggler and then made icons that they were juggling. We used vivid for the outlined and pastel for colouring them in. The parents cut out our shapes and Mr Neumegan glued them onto little foam blocks to the background, this made them stand out from the page. You should come to Room 10 and see the finished articles or come to our assembly on Friday to see them!

Mason's art work was so impressive that Mr Neumegan has photographed it to go on the art gallery website.

Cool Cross Country

We all had a fabulous afternoon at the Outram Cross Country on Thursday afternoon! We all ran incredibly hard and the number of children that got into the top 6 for their year levels in Room 10 was great. A particular well done to Gabriella and Riley who won their year 3 races. Ten Room 10 children will be heading to Taieri Beach on Tuesday for the Taieri competition.

Skyping Joe in the Lakes District

This morning we skyped Joe again. He is in the north part of England at his cousins house. We found out that it is 26 degrees there at the moment and the moon was rising over the trees. We ate birthday cake and sang happy birthday to him because it was his birthday earlier this week. We are looking forward to catching up with him when he comes back!

Hello again Room 10

Joe here... today is our last day in France - tomorrow we move on to the Yorkshire Dales in the north of the UK.

We've done some great things here in the Dordogne region - lots of lovely meals out and seen some very old things - yesterday we went to a cave and saw cave drawings by prehistoric man. Then we saw a cool old town that was built in a cliff many thousands of years ago and some of the houses still stand today - they were used right up until the 17th century!

Here are some pictures of us in a canoe on the river and at a chateau (this means castle and there are heaps around here!)

We also went for a pony ride - there is a picture here

Hello

Thanks for all the comments on the blog.. it sounds great writing letters to Fiji! I did have a great time in Iceland we went to the Blue Lagoon which was a volcanic hot pool that you can actually swim in - we had a swim in there - you can also cover yourself in white volcano mud - mum and dad did this but I didn't want to. All around us was volcanic rocks all different colours because Iceland was made by a volcanic eruption.

The other cool thing about Iceland was that it was sunny and light all night! This is because of the way the earth tilts and because Iceland is so near the top. It was not too cold in Iceland about 16 degrees.

We saw some great waterfalls too

We are now in London in my grandmas house. We went to Shrek the Musical yesterday and it was awesome - I got a puppet Gingy like in this picture. We saw Big Ben and a big wheel called the London Eye and a building call The Gherkin because it is shaped like a gherkin and a monument called Cleopatra's needle which was a gift from Egypt in the 1890s - it was built in Heliopolis in Egypt in 1475bc! Today has been very very hot - too hot for me!

This morning we Skyped Joe and his family in Boston. Boston is on the East coast of America - a very long way away from us. Room 1 also came to our classroom to skype in with us. We found out LOADS of interesting information because we asked some pretty awesome questions!

Dear Room 10

I have been in Boston - it is the complete other side of the United States from Los Angeles. In this picture I am going on a Duck Tour ride - it is half army tank and half boat - a bus which goes on land and water! I went to an aquarium and saw some amazing fish and touched Sting Rays - I figured out that sting rays have their teeth on their backs. The back of their tail is actually their sensors. We had a ride on the underground train called the 'T'. We also went to the Science Museum.

Next we had a trip to Washington DC and Richmond and I'll tell you about that in my next blog update as well as some more time in Boston before we leave America to go to the UK and Europe

We have been growing cress heads. First we painted clean yoghurt pottles with faces and then filled them up with soil. Next we added cress seeds and water. Look how much they have grown in 2 weeks!

Dear Room 10

I've just come from a big bumpy plane ride from Disneyland in Los Angeles and arrived in Boston.

Some of the rides that I did in Disneyland were Indiana Jones, Splash Mountain (mum squealed all the way down), The Matterhorn (mum squealed all the way down), Swinging Ferris Wheel (mum squealed all the way round), and the Grizzly Bear River Rafting (mum squealed all the way down and we both got soaked) - my favourite was Pirates Of The Caribbean (mum only squealed a little bit)

Our hotel in Boston is called the Boston Marriott Cambridge Hotel - dad has been at work all day and we've all slept and watched a movie (How to train a dragon). Now we are going out for dinner... I'll send another update soon

Room 10 were guests at the Royal Wedding - well we all wish that we were. On Monday we wrote about being guests at the wedding.

At the Royal Wedding I was very nervous. I saw Kate and I felt like I was dreaming. She was romantic. William was handsome too. Their carriage was shiny.

I was at the Royal wedding and I was dressed in a read and white dress with white leggings underneath my dress. When I saw Princess Kate I said Wow because her dress was beautiful. Princess Kate held her dads hand and walked to Prince William. He was handsome very handsome as well.

What have you been doing for the holidays?
Mr and Mrs P went to Christchurch in the weekend and found themselves 4km from the epicentre of the 5.3 earthquake. It was very scary and the noise was very very loud before the ground shook! Mr and Mrs P are very pleased that they left Benjamin in Dunedin with Nana. Mrs P's sisters birthday party had to be cancelled because there was no power and the road had rocks falling onto it.

Mrs Bayne has been teaching Room 2 their alphabet and today was H day. So.....the rescue helicopter came to visit this afternoon and we all got to go on the field to have a look at it. Today we had our first session in the Allen Centre with Mrs Stedman and Mrs Meehan. Kate shared a special rock that she found at her house. Mrs Stedman told us that it was millions of years old and was called schist.

Hi everyone - what have you been up to over the holidays? Mr and Mrs P and Benjamin went to Galloway with friends over the new year and then we went to Nelson for a few days.
Benjamin had a fantastic xmas and loved the idea that most of the presents under the tree for him - although he did have fun opening VIto the cats presents too!

Working with our Student Teachers

We have been doing some very exciting things with our 1st year Student Teachers this week. Miss McCormick has been teaching printing and also working with the whales maths group. Mr Rowe has been working with the sharks maths group.
This afternoon we had the first lesson of our science and dance learning. Miss McCormick worked with half the class on a At the Beach theme for dance. Mr Rowe had half the class doing mixing - they made playdoh.

We are scientists AND mathematicians

Look what we did for maths on Wednesday! In the morning we went out and drew around our partners shadow and then using a hand measurement we measured the shadow length and width. We also looked at where the shadow was pointing.

In the afternoon we went back outside and did the same thing again. We did some great discussion and worked out that we had created a clock because our shadows showed a quarter. From this we worked out that we had used a quarter of the day at school between these 2 drawings.

Athletics Day

What a great day at Memorial Park for the South Taieri Athletics sports. Well done Jade, Hayden and Oscar who were part of the Year 3 and 4 400m sprints. This is a huge achievement as they had to try out for this team and were racing against year 4's as well. Connor G and Oscar were also part of the Year 3 and 4 relay team. Well done everyone for a fabulous day!

This morning Hayden bought along a bird nest with eggs in it. Connor and Hayden covered the eggs with feathers and a wee blanket to keep the eggs warm. Can anyone work out what kind of bird these eggs belong to?

Optional Home Learning Tasks

As a class we wrote a list of over 20 things that we wanted to do for our optional home learning tasks. Lots of children have made an egg house, vege animals and their house and dioramas. We have had SO many children completing the tasks that we have now had to put them on display on a large table in our cloakroom. Come and see what we have been making.

Katelyn recently did a ballet exam and got a very outstanding 24 out of 25!! Wow Katelyn!!
Isla has been completing the Mathletics programme at home and recently scored the Bronze award! Awesome Isla!

HOLIDAYS SHOULD BE LONGER......

Alex's reasons
They should be longer because the children can exercise to get fit. They should be longer so the teachers have more energy to teach because if teachers do not teach children they will not get education. They should be longer so the teachers can check the children's work so it does not get mixed up with other work. They should be longer so everyone gets a rest because if it was non stop learning people would fall asleep in class.

Cait and Zeke's reasons
Holidays should be longer
Because you can read to keep your brain active ready for school again.
Because you can spend more time with your friends and family and make new friends.
So me and my family could spend more time Naseby because it was boring staying up there for only 2 days.

Finn and Jade’s reasons
So we can get more rest because we will have more energy for school.
Holidays should be longer so we can go can go camping for longer. So then we can learn more about the town or area.
Holidays should be longer so we can read books at
home so we get more exercise for our brain. Also for school.
Holidays should be longer so we can learn about wildlife. Cause if we don’t learn about wildlife we won’t know what is not poisnise and whats not .Then if we haven’t we can eat something poisnise and die, how would our parents like that?

Chocolate Fractions

We have begun learning about fractions and today we had to make some choices. There was a huge mars bar, a normal sized bar and a mini bar. We had to decide what size we would rather have. 16 of us chose the huge bar, 6 chose the medium bar and 4 chose the smallest bar. Then we found out that we didn't get a bar each - we had to use our knowledge about fractions to cut up the chocolate bars to feed ALL of the group. We worked out that the people that chose the medium bar got the biggest pieces!
Yum - what a way to start the day.

Vege Animals for the Flower Show

Josh learnt that there is a new species called snakeskin chiton
Alex P's favourite bit of the day was touching the starfish in the touch tank
Isla's favourite bit was looking at the sharks
Tomas' favourite bit was when one crayfish was attacking another
Finn learnt that the chiton has teeth made of metal
Polly liked touching the bumpy starfish in the bucket
Cait learnt that sharks eggs are made out of the same thing as our fingernails
Jade liked seeing the starfish squashed on the glass
